Located at Wairere boulders; a world unique geological phenomenon, right here in Northland. Well marked walking trails take you through the boulder valley and native bush.

The trails follow bridges, boardwalks and stairs, under and over the boulders and take from 40 minutes to 2 hours. We have our own bush pool swimming hole and hidden rock animals in the bush for kids to find.  You can also stay in our B&B or campsite.

Our café is fully open weekends and holidays serving lunches, baking, ice creams and drinks.

Perched on the hill just a short walk from the marina and waterfront in the historic village port of Opua we enjoy views of our stunning NZ scenery, from the Waikare Inlet and the Veronica Channel to the surrounding bush-clad hills and a clear night sky.  Opua Motel is small, friendly and welcoming, a place to relax and call home, offering affordable boutique accommodation and facilities. Come join Marnie, our happy little chappy Arthur and myself Rich in our charming wee motel on the hill. Situated an easy walk or ride down to the start of the trail with a restaurant and general store en route, its the ideal place to start or end your adventure.

We offer a guest laundry and you can help yourself to our veges and herbs if you like! Lemon for a G&T?

There’s tui’s in the trees,  great sea views, bbqs and Bush walks here, and friendly family atmosphere.

Book with us and if you’re thirsty we’ll throw in a ice cold beer! Stay on for a few days to enjoy the nearby walks and attractions that we’d love to show you.

It’s the castle that cares, a place to rejuvenate before or after a ride.

We also run Tango Jetski Tours, the most fun way to see the Bay of Islands – like bikes of the sea you get to appreciate the wildlife beautiful surrounds first hand. Nothing compares, everyone from young to old loves the experience.

This two bedroomed cottage C.1880 is located on a stunning site 3 min drive from the car ferry. Stroll to the cafe, art gallery, pub, dairy, post office, RSA or bowls club. Take in the heritage walk around the village or just unwind with far reaching views in front of you. Refurbished in recent years this is a very tidy cottage. Whilst it’s a good place to rest if passing through it also makes a good base to discover Northlands beaches and walks. As trustees and guardians on the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail Trust – 2kms of the trail passes through their river valley – they are and have been invested since the beginning of the trail in the success of the trail for their surrounding communities.

We have a wonderful formal dining room which has been filled with antiques of the period. Dining with us is reminescent of the dining elegance of times past. Paheke provides a home cooked three course meal with a choice for each course. The meal is served with a fine selection of New Zealand and Australian Wines. We prepare New Zealand cuisine utilising fresh local produce.

  • To best cater for our guests, meals are available only by prior arrangement (24 hours notice is required).

Come and experience the peace and tranquility of the Wairere Boulders overnight in the Boulder Bach. The bach is situated next to our family home and has 1 double bed, 1 single bed and a lovely ensuite bathroom. The views from the bach are amazing, you can look down over the boulder valley to the Hokianga Harbour.  Breakfast is included in the price and you will be treated to fresh homemade bread and preserves along with fruit, granola, coffee and tea. Evening meals are available on request.

On our tranquil farm we offer visitors a chance to explore the unique environment of the Wairere boulders; a world unique geological phenomenon, right here in Northland. Well marked walking trails take you through the boulder valley and native bush.

The trails follow bridges, boardwalks and stairs, under and over the boulders and take from 40 minutes to 2 hours. We have our own bush pool swimming hole and hidden rock animals in the bush for kids to find.

You can start or end your walk with a coffee and cake at the Boulder Cafe, and if you have a self-contained campervan you can even experience this incredible hidden oasis overnight.

Camping

We also have camping for tents now – for the summer season, December to Easter, we are charging $20 a pitch (up to 2 adults and all kids).   From Easter to end of November it will be ‘free if you pay for boulder entry’

Charges for to enter Wairere Boulders:

  • Adult $15,
  • Kids $5,
  • Students/Seniors $10,
  • Family (2 adults and all kids) $35.

We are open every day, if the cafe is unattended you can pay by cash at the honesty box or bank transfer.

Campervans free overnight stays if paid to go around Boulders.

Wairere Boulders has recently changed hands. Felix and Rita have retired and the Nature reserve has been purchased by the Grant family. Graham & Paula Grant and their 6 children are originally from Scotland. Graham is a farmer and Paula, a vet. They have lived on the Scottish islands, in France and Raglan before moving to the Far North in December 2017. They plan to maintain the nature reserve and develop more activities that complement the unique character of the Wairere Boulders.

The Opua start or finish of the Twin Coast cycle trail is just a few minutes ride from our front door.

The boutique apartments are tastefully decorated with contemporary luxury furnishings, artwork and quality bed linen.  Each large bedroom features an en-suite bathroom and  amenities with big fluffy towels and robes.

Enjoy the luxury of spacious living and dining areas and large private wrap around decks.  Included in your stay is a healthy continental breakfast with homemade muesli, yoghurt, seasonal fruit and condiments with freshly baked bread or pastries delivered to your personal bakery box each morning.

We offer our 28 Foot (8.5 Metres) caravan with a bedroom (double bed), kitchen/dining/lounge and toilet and shower (shub) plus an outdoor shower. This is on Solar or Mains power, has gas cooking/oven, fridge/freezer, Freeview TV, Wi-Fi and Phone charging. Awning out (subject to wind conditions), available BBQ, overall is very comfortable.

We are at 183B Horeke road Okaihau, the Cycleway to Horeke passes by the top of our ROW.

Setback on long private driveway, our fully fenced section with post and rail on the front face, has native bush to the sides and to the rear, the land its self is adorn natives, including Taraire, Pururi, Kohekohe, Nikau and Totara.

Featured also is an abundant vege garden and newly planted orchard with exotic species also. Our spot is in an exceedingly private rural setting and has an amazing view.

Your hosts, Joan and Terry have lived in Okaihau area for the last sixteen years, prior to that Kaikohe, the other member of their family is a very friendly five-year-old Staffy dog called Gus, partial also to greeting visitors. Joan is formally a Taranaki-ite, and Terry a far Far Northerner. Both well known locally and know the local history as well.

Years ago it was a big macadamia plantation with near 8000 trees.

Currently, only about 1,200 trees remain on site, and the business has largely become a hobby.

Rooms that previously housed plantation workers have been converted into guest houses, and these are becoming more popular with visitors every year.

Two places to stay – sleepout and caravan. Sleep out – bedroom 1 – 3 double bunks/ Bedroom 2 – 1 double bed. Fully equipped kitchen. 2 showers, 3 toilets. Washing machine.
