Opua is a bustling commercial port with a large marina and boatyard. It is the first port for oversea yachts arriving in NZ after crossing the Pacific Ocean, and houses an impressive and ever changing array of boats.

There are some nice spots for having a drink and something to eat, plus a general store which perches on the water’s edge and is 100 years old.

Opua also has the car ferry which is a 7 minute crossing from Opua to Okiato, with ferries running every 10 minutes and then it is 8km drive to Russell.  Opua is just 5.3km driving to Paihia which is the central tourism hub of the Bay of Islands.

This the Eastern end of the cycleway.
