East to West! – 2 day ride cycling the whole trail – Opua to Horeke

Day 1 - Opua to Kaikohe 45 km or Opua to Okaihau 59 km

Day 2 – Kaikohe to Horeke 44 km or Okaihau to Horeke 28 km

  • Day 1 - set out from Opua – heading west –pick up a snack or two before you leave! 11 kms following the beautiful Waikere inlet, through a tunnel over a bridge!
  • Next stop is Kawakawa plenty of fantastic cafes to choose from, this town is known for its arts and crafts and cultural and heritage interests -give yourself a chance to look around! Maybe grab some lunch and a snack as Kaikohe is 34km ride with a gradual incline to Kaikohe, passing the northernmost operational point of the railway at Otiria which recently stopped running. Beautiful waterfalls, the Suspension Twin Bridges at Tuhipa and rolling farmland. There is a bit of climb near the end called Jacobs Ladder this levels out once you reach Kaikohe aerodrome! Kaikohe has so much to offer, have a look at the accommodation and see and do options. Check it out plenty may tickle your fancy! You can stay the night in Kaikohe (the middle of the trail give or take 1 km!) or if you’re keen you can cycle on to Okaihau and stay close by!
  • Whether you stay in Kaikohe or Okaihau we highly recommend the Waiariki Ngawha Springs for a soak after your days riding! A hidden gem on the outskirts of Kaikohe – you need your own transport or organize a shuttle.
  • Day 2 – Head off from Kaikohe to Okaihau, an enjoyable 14km ride following the rail trail through a tunnel, past Lake Omapere and through a water Ford! Grab a snack and forge on along the trail from Okaihau passing interesting historical points, give yourself time to stop read and enjoy the peace of rural Northland!
  • Okaihau – Horeke - Your last leg! Drop down into the valley, meandering along the river, through native bush, and along the Boardwalk to the stunning Horeke Harbour. A pleasant 28 km cycle! Take a packed lunch for your stop at Snows farm – a beautiful picnic spot by the river.
  • The finish of the track is at the Mangungu Mission Station have a wander around, you’ll be surprised at the history you will pick up!
  • Organise your shuttle to pick you up from Horeke Hotel after a bite to eat and a refreshing drink!

This is only 1 of 3 options – there is plenty to do in the area and you can easily add on overnight stays and spend longer enjoying the trail – there is plenty of accommodation and activities in the surrounding areas!

Timing wise – this is something that can be enjoyed all year round! On occasion you may get a little wet!
