Base at Mid Point! – 2 day ride cycling the whole trail

Day 1 - Kaikohe to Opua 45 km

Day 2 - Kaikohe to Horeke 42km

  • Have your Base in Kaikohe at least 2 nights!
  • Day 1 - Cycle Kaikohe – Opua (cycling West to East) You’ve chosen the easiest option this is a pleasant downhill 45km cycle. Pack a lunch for a stop at halfway (there is a toilet here) you will pass the northernmost operational point of the railway at Otiria. Beautiful waterfalls, the Suspension Twin Bridges at Tuhipa and rolling farmland, plan for afternoon tea in one of the many eateries in Kawakawa or Moerewa. The last 11km stretch to Opua is disused rail corridor that you are cycling along or through as there is a train tunnel, then you come to the restored tracks and share the trail with Gabriel at restored steam train. It is a very easy ride with stunning water views.
    • Either organize a shuttle company to pick you up from Opua To Kaikohe or Cycle Back!
  • At night a true hidden gem is the Waiariki Ngawha Springs  Perfect to soak your weary limbs! You need your own transport or organize a shuttle.
  • Enjoy any of the local eateries
  • 2nd day head East to West to Kaikohe to Okaihau to Horeke – a fabulous ride following the rail trail through a tunnel and following meandering rivers, through native bush, along a boardwalk to the stunning Horeke Harbour. A pleasant 42 km cycle! Take a packed lunch for lunch along the way, there are plenty of places to stop or if you can aim for the picnic spot at Snows farm – a beautiful spot by the river.
  • The finish of the track is at the Mangungu Mission Station have a wander around, you’ll be surprised at the history you will pick up!
  • Organise your shuttle to pick you up from Horeke Hotel after a bite to eat and a refreshing drink!

This is only 1 of 3 options – there is plenty to do in the area and you can easily add on overnight stays and spend longer enjoying the trail – there is plenty of accommodation and activities in the surrounding areas!

Timing wise – this is something that can be enjoyed all year round! On occasion you may get a little wet!
