Okaihau – Horeke Trail (24km)

The stretch from Okaihau and ending at Mangungu Mission is the most demanding. This is a Grade 3 trail and follows the Utakura River to Horeke with a 1200m section of boardwalk through mangroves on the edge of the harbour.

Detour info – On Horeke Road the detour requires cyclists to ride on the road for about 500m before re-joining the formed trail.

Okaihau – This small settlement services the nearby rural community. Its name means “feast of the winds” referring to Okaihau’s location on a 200m high ridge overlooking the upper reaches of the Hokianga Harbour. Just out of the town the trail passes a set of Memorial Gates that honour the New Zealand soldiers of World War 1.

Look out for the huge puriri trees in the local school grounds, remnants of ancient forests. The entire area is also rich in pioneer and Māori history.
