Kaikohe – Okaihau Trail (14km)
This section of cycle trail is open.
It’s an easy undulating ride that takes you to the towns of Kaikohe and Okaihau, the Kaikohe aerodrome, through an old rail tunnel, through wetlands, pine forests and native bush and past Lake Omapere. The trail between Kaikohe and Okaihau follows a disused railway corridor and takes you through an 80m long curving disused rail tunnel built in 1915.
Whilst in Kaikohe, be sure to visit the Heritage Kaikohe. Visit and explore the restored historic buildings including New Zealand’s oldest courthouse, a blacksmith’s shop and old gum digging equipment (150m from Station Rd exit to the cycleway).
Pause at the Okaihau Memorial Gates in honour of our fallen WWI soldiers. Return on the trail to your starting point or arrange transport back to your accommodation from either end.
